In April 2025, Belgrade became the epicenter of the world music scene when the legendary musical Phantom of the Opera was first performed in Serbia. This production, as part of the international tour, was held in the Sava Center from April 22 to 29, with an additional performance on April 30 due to the huge interest of the audience.
The Phantom of the Opera, by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is one of the most successful and longest-running musicals in theater history. It premiered in 1986 in London's West End, and to date has won over 70 prestigious awards, including seven Tony and four Olivier awards. The play was seen by more than 160 million people in 46 countries and 195 cities around the world.
The Belgrade production assembled a team of over 100 members, including actors, technical staff and orchestra. The set design was spectacular, with more than 230 costumes and impressive special effects that took your breath away. Particularly noteworthy was the famous chandelier, a replica of the one from the Paris Opera, 3,2 meters wide and weighing 650 kilograms, which descended at a speed of 2,5 meters per second.
Starring Nadeem Naman as Phantom, George Wilkinson and Bridget Costello as Christine, Dougie Carter as Raoul, and Lara Martins as Carlotta. Their performances were extremely emotional and captivating, which the audience rewarded with a long standing ovation.
The premiere was held in front of a full Blue Hall of the Sava Center, with the presence of numerous figures from the world of culture and public life. After the performance, an exclusive after party was organized in the foyer, where the actors mingled with the audience in a relaxed atmosphere.
Due to the great interest and positive reactions, the organizers decided to add another performance on April 30, which was also sold out. This decision was made as a sign of gratitude to the Belgrade audience for the warm reception and enthusiasm.
The Phantom of the Opera in Sava Center was a cultural phenomenon that showed that Belgrade can host the most prestigious world productions. This performance left a deep impression on all present and set new standards for future events in the region.
